Okay, here's another tale of a local band that posted on U-Tube and now has a record deal.

Check out the cd entitled Ocean Eyes by the local Owatana Minnesota band Owl City.

Their current single that's playing on the radio is Fireflies.

I heard that, and it's a good song. Kinda reminds me of Basshunter. I'm definitely gonna check out the CD now.

I love him in a totally manly way, I own everything by Owl City and I'm looking for Adam young solo work.

Fireflies was okay the first few listens, but all the other songs sound the same. Maybe my dislike has something to do with the the line about a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs, or maybe it's just because I can't help but compare the vocalist unfavorably to Ben Gibbard from the Postal Service. I do find it annoying that everyone claims Owl city as so original and amazing when Indie acts such as the Postal Service have done the exact same thing in the past with not nearly as much recognition. I won't say I despise them or they suck because it's music -- and music, even If not your favorite, rarely ever "sucks" -- but I'm certainly not a fan.

I have to agree here. The style, vocals and songs are a complete rip off of the Postal Service which, in turn, is the side project of the front man from "Death Cab for Cutie". The lyrics are a rather bad attempt at sounding smart like the Postal Service songs.
I recommend people pick up a Postal Service albumand check out "Plans" and "Transatlanticism" from Death Cab for Cutie.
Owl City is ok, not the first band to be unoriginal and the man's got talent and a very nice voice, but I find the aforementioned bands much much better at doing what Owl City is trying to do.

Thanks for the oppinions. The point I was just pointing out that no matter if you like them or not, you have to give bands like this credit for at least putting something out there for people to see and listen to whether that be one U-Tube or somewhere else in the hopes of possibly being discovered. No, I don't have the CD and though I do like the Fireflies song...why do radio stations overplay songs cause then people get sick of them. It's just like when that Carry Underwood came out with that trashing her boyfriend's car song, after a couple of times, it was like please play something else!
Anyway, I was just letting people about the band and I'll have to check out the others mentioned.
Thanks:
Chastity

lol that line of the song is funny though..

I own everything by Death cab and The Postal Service, but I still rather enjoy the stuff from Owl City. It's great that they've gotten recognition for there music, sucks the Postal Service got limited commercial success, they've certainly never gotten a #1 hit.
Regardless, Owl city is awesome. lol

fireflies is a great ringtone

I hadn't heard the Postal Service, so I checked them out, and i can definitely see the comparison, but I still like them both.

yuck yuck, just seriously yuck. i hate that song with a severe hateful passion. so therefore i have no desire to listen to anything else by them. just ewww sick yuck gross, yuck. it's garbage.

Lmao. Seconding Pipi, I personally find "Fireflies" to be boring and ridiculous (agreeing with Brice's comment about the lightning bug line) and everything else sounds just the same. And I disagree with the opinion that he has talent and a good voice, his voice grates on my nerves for some reason. It was suggested to me that I might like "Vanilla Twilight" better if I didn't like "Fireflies", and it is a slightly more bearable song, but again, I was bored and the lyrics are ridiculous. Nothing original about them. I guess I can see the comparison between them and Postal Service, but I like Postal Service much much better, and Death Cab better than Postal Service I think.

"Fireflies" is a song where he uses the autopitch correction almost as agressively as Cher did in "Believe.. in Life after love...." except in her case it was delliberate and kind of cool, in this song it is just annoying and one suspects hides a singer who's not exactly that good.
Still, they're notat all bad and I think he can sing, may be thought it was some sort of style, but this song falls horribly flat with me, the Dentist song, think it's called Dental Care, it amusing and their best I think.

Post 20 by CrazedMidget (Sweet fantacy's really do come in small packages!) on Wednesday, 09-Dec-2009 14:43:55

they have a new single out, it's called Venella twilight, just amazingness!

Post 21 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Wednesday, 09-Dec-2009 14:55:49

You know who else they remind me of, now that I think about it? Hellogoodbye, another indie band that really didn't go anywhere as far as I know. Anyway, I do like Vanilla Twilight, but then again I'm getting more open to techno and electronic music in general, and I guess Owl City is as friendly a place as any to start. I used to be one of those people who hated drum machines or anything "not authentic" with a passion, but I'm trying to expand my music tastes a bit, and some of that kind of music is pleasant to listen to once in awhile.

i quite llike the song and the album for that matter!

With every song or artist, there are going to be people who like them, and others who don't. I happen to like Owl City, and he is friends with Relient K which is really cool!

Post 24 by Austin's Angel (move over school!) on Sunday, 20-Dec-2009 19:34:50

I just saw Owl City in concert about four days ago. and I love it. I didn't think I would. Butt I do. Adam does have this really odd personality, and he didn't talk much between songs, but the music was still great. and to the one who said they wanted to find some of Adam's solo projects, will you let me know where you find it? I have two of owl cities albums and a few unreleased songs.

Post 25 by Austin's Angel (move over school!) on Sunday, 20-Dec-2009 19:36:02

Oh yeah. Hot air balloon is my fave song currently.

ugh, seriously? I think they absolutely suck.
